Olive

Most of you who have brought your pet into our clinic have had the pleasure of seeing our clinic rat, Olive, during your visit. She can normally be seen either in her cage on the reception desk or rolling around the lobby in her hot pink exercise ball! Olive is a wonderful member of the PMC family and is working hard to improve the image of rats everywhere!! Over the New Year holiday weekend the technicians taking care of the pets who were boarding with us noticed that Olive had a lot of dried blood in her cage and on her bedding. Otherwise she was behaving just as she always does, energetic and happy to see everyone. When we all came back to work on Monday, Dr. Reed examined Olive and discovered the source of the blood…Olive was having bright red vaginal discharge. Her urine appeared normal so the source of the blood was most likely her uterus. This conclusion is further supported by the fact that rats are unfortunately prone to developing uterine, ovarian, and mammary tumors. The only course of action was to spay her and her surgery was scheduled for the following morning. Olive did beautifully during the surgery, but a large swelling was discovered in her left uterine horn. We sent the swelling off for histopathology and the report revealed the mass to be a Leiomyoma, a benign tumor originating from the uterus. Luckily, it appears that the tumor had not spread at the time of surgery so we expect the spay to be curative! Olive has recovered wonderfully from surgery and can once again be seen in the lobby greeting our clients as they come in the doors!
