Snake Bites
I thought I might mention that with the cooler weather we are seeing an increase in the number of snake-bite cases in my practice. Whether we like it or not we live in an area of the country where poisonous snakes are relatively common. Rattlesnakes, copperheads, coral snakes and cotton-mouths are all found in Bell county. This time of year snakes are coming out to feed for the last few times before hibernation.
Dogs and cats may encounter a snake while in the yard, at the lake or even on a neighborhood walk. The most common symptom of snake bite is extreme swelling on the face or front legs. Pets are typically bitten in these areas because they are sniffing, biting or batting at the snake with there front paws. Often two puncture wounds are visible toward the center of the swelling. If you notice your pet is exhibiting these type of symptoms, see you veterinarian immediately for treatment. The sooner treatment is initiated the better chance your pet has of survival and the fewer complications that will be encountered.
