Kitten Milk

Q: Is it OK to give my kitten milk? My friends tell me it can be bad for them.

A: A small amount of milk for your cat or kitten is probably not going to cause any problems, although too much can definitely cause diarrhea. Diarrhea in kittens can cause them to become dehydrated which can lead to death. Remember, cats don't produce the enzyme to digest dairy products like humans do. This makes digesting milk, cheese, and ice-cream very hard for them. I would limit milk for your kitten to an occasional treat and in very small quantities.

In general, it is not a good idea to feed cats and dogs "people food". Eating human food can predispose your pet to many health problems such as obesity, pancreatitis, dental disease and other gastrointestinal problems. Today's quality pet diets are very nutritionally complete, therefore, supplementation is not necessary and not advised.
