Iguanas

Q: My Iguana has had a color change from pretty green to a dull brown over the past few months. He has also been having diarrhea. What could be causing these problems?

A: Without actually seeing the animal it is impossible to diagnose what is going on with him. My advise would be to seek a veterinarian who is experienced with reptiles and have the animal evaluated. A physical exam, stool check and thorough history should be taken.

Iguanas can be fine pets if some simple husbandry techniques are used. First of all, unfiltered sunlight is very important in their calcium metabolism. My advise would be to build an outdoor enclosure to help in this area. Secondly, an appropriate diet is essential in maintaining a healthy iguana. There are several good books about iguanas that can give helpful feeding ideas as well as feeding guides from your local reptile veterinarian.

When the animal is properly maintained, problems like color changes and diarrhea can be minimized and thus trips to the veterinarian less frequent.
