Gassy K9

Q: My six year old Pug has been having a horrible gas problem for the past month. Sometimes I have a problem staying in the same room with him, not to mention the embarrassment when guests are over. Any suggestions? Ashley, Harker Heights
A: I have some questions for you first, Ashley. First of all, has there been a recent dietary change. Secondly, has your pet been to the lake recently or anywhere else he could have swallowed dirty water.

Dietary change is a very common cause of excessive gas production in pets. Your pet may do very well on a certain brand but be less tolerant to other foods due to differences in ingredients. Furthermore, table scraps may cause this type of problem if enough of the right type of food is ingested.

Protozoal organisms such as Giardia are very common in this area and can cause excessive gas. This organism is easily transmitted to your pet from drinking from infected puddles, lake or stream water.

If your pet has not recently had a dietary change and this problem persists, I would recommend seeing your veterinarian to rule out more serious causes.
