Ear Mites

Q: Our cat 'Jazzy' has black junk coming out of his ears. I've been treating him with ear mite medicine from Wal-Mart but it is not going away. What else can be done for his ears?

A: There is a good possibility that Jazzy does have ear mites and that the over-the-counter ear mite medication is just not strong enough to kill all of the mites. I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian for an examination to confirm the ear mite diagnosis and to acquire medication that will cure the problem. An examination could also reveal other causes for his ear problem such as yeast or bacterial infections.

Ear mites are tiny creatures living in the ear canal external to the eardrum. They are easily seen during a physical examination using an otoscope, which illuminates and magnifies the mites. Ear mites are transmitted from animal to animal during direct contact and exposure to infected bedding. Treatment with new generation medications is very affective.
