Cryptorchid Puppy

Q: We have a four month old Chihuahua puppy that we would like to use for breeding. He only has one testicle dropped and we plan to have the bad one removed. Will he still be able to breed?

A: This condition is referred to as being cryptorchid. This simply means one or both of the testicles have not dropped into the scrotum. Typically this should happen by six weeks of age but in some cases, especially in smaller breeds, the testes may take longer to drop. The hidden testicle may be either inside the abdomen or under the skin in the lower flank region. Abdomenal testicles are more prone to cancer and can twist on their blood supply (torsion) which is a life threatening condition. Either way, this condition is hereditary and will most likely be passed on to his puppies if he is breed.

To answer your question, yes, he still would be able to breed after only having one testicle removed, although, I highly recommend that this puppy be completely neutered so that he will not pass this trait to future generations. I truly don't know of any veterinarian in this area that would only partially neuter your pet as this practice is in the opinion of most, unethical.

Your pup must be six months of age to be neutered so you have a couple of months in which the testicle still might drop, but it is unlikely. Good luck and good pet parenting.
